It’s only in recent years that the American version of Halloween has crept into the UK with Trick or Treat and Fancy Dress in the street.
Before that, the only time kids would go door to door in the UK at this time of year was with ‘Penny For the Guy’ – a whole but forgotten homage to Guy Fawkes on November 5th. Even when I was a kid, we’d carve out swedes or turnips (very hard work and not recommended) rather than pumpkins! So how did Halloween grow up to become the massive dress up opportunity it is today? Well, long long before Trick or Treat and fancy dress, Halloween was a festival called Samhain that marked the end of the harvest season for Celtic farmers.
