Starting our pick of children’s books for Christmas comes the lovely and sassy ‘Violet and the Pearl of the Orient’ by Harriet Whitehorn.
This is a charming children’s book where our adventurous sleuth, Violet, is on the case to uncover the truth about a missing jewel. The book is full of colourful cartoonesque characters from Dee Dee Derota to Count and Countess Duplicitous.
Whitehorn’s use of language is gorgeously effortless, fast and fun. The text is laid out in a really accessible format, with little purple graphics scattered amongst the pages making the book always feel playful. We’re also loving the addition of a glossary at the back explaining those tricky words like architect and pedigree. Coming in a beautiful hardback edition, this is a thoroughly modern book for thoroughly modern girls, but with a classic whodunnit feel. Everyone is going to fall in love with Violet!
Violet and the Pearl of the Orient by Harriet Whitehorn is out now published by Simon and Schuster. Suitable for ages 6 to 8.
