The summer holidays are rapidly approaching, you’ve got your suitcase out the loft and your passport in hand, but what do you need to pack to ensure the kids are looked after at the seaside?

For the perfect beach trip, you’ll need to find a balance between fun and safety. To help you out, we’ve rounded up six must-haves, to make sure your next family vacay at the beach is a memorable one!

Protect delicate skin with a good sun-cream

Children’s skin is much more sensitive to UV rays than adults, so it’s important to limit exposure by keeping little ones in the shade and well lathered in a good sun-cream. Trust us, sun-stroke can ruin a holiday, so taking precautions to prevent this is essential! If you have a budding mermaid on your hands, then a water-resistant lotion is a must. Garnier Ambre Solaire Kids Anti-Sand spray was dubbed as the Independents best buy in the 2017 round-up, and is available to buy from Boots for a mere £8. Its advised to top up frequently, especially after swimming, but not to worry as the spray bottle makes application quick and easy for playful sun-seekers!

A coin purse for sweet treats

No trip to the beach would be complete without an ice cream, but seeing as they aren’t packable, you’ll want to make sure you have some change on you for sweet treats. You’ll also need cash at hand for water (read ‘beer’ for those over 18), as hydration is vital with pro-longed sun exposure. Keep your change safe and organised at the beach in a discreet coin purse, choose a bold, primary coloured design to nail this seasons ‘Crayola bright’ trend!

Bonus Tip: ice cream is the best leverage to pry kids away from the beach at home time – work smarter, not harder!

Trendy beach-wear

A summer holiday offers the perfect opportunity to experiment with new trends, and we’re sure the kids will be keen to get in on the action! For little girls, florals are key! Whilst summer & florals aren’t exactly a new thing, this year the print has been reinvented to cover 70’s style and tropical patterns. We love this bright, botanical playsuit from Roxy at Ann’s cottage – not only is the pattern bang on trend, the romper design is super practice for pulling on after the beach.

If you’ve got a miniature surfer-dude to contend with, then you’ll want to kit him out in an old-school retro print tee, like this one from Animal’s boys range. The white cotton material is breathable in warm weather, and the t-shirt style will protect shoulders from the suns powerful rays – plus retro prints are a summer 2018 style essential. Pair the Tee, with some colourful boardshorts for a beachy-perfect look.

Naturally, swimwear and flip-flops are also a beach must, so get these packed in your beach bag too, which brings us to our next item…

A big beach bag

When taking kids to the beach, you’ll need to be prepared for any eventuality, so an oversized beach bag is essential. Some parents favour a backpack for practicality, but if you still want to be stylish, we’d pick a straw ‘grab’ bag design, like this one from John Lewis. It kills two trends in one, with natural fibres and cute pom-pom detailing. A large tote bag can also double up as your plane bag, nothing says holiday practicality like multifunctional fashion.

An Inflatable flamingo, cactus, unicorn, pizza slice…

Or, all the above! Our Instagram feeds have been saturated with pics of bikini-clad girls enjoying the sunshine in oversized novelty inflatables and you’ll be pleased to hear that the trend is here to stay! There are tonnes of quirky inflatables to choose from, and they’re sure to keep kids entertained. Last year Primark had a great range of reasonably priced inflatables and we’re pretty sure they’ll be restocked for the upcoming summer season. Beach toys are the ultimate way to keep the kids entertained, if the inflatables aren’t for you, choose a simple Frisbee, a humble bat and ball, or a good old fashioned bucket and spade.

What good are all those family memories if you can’t capture them? Whilst your mobile phone is fine for quick snaps, if you really want to up your photography game, a GoPro camera is your new best friend! Not only is it compact, it makes photography easy, with the range of simple settings, and you can even take underwater pictures, which is a cool way to capture those key family moments. After your holiday, you can get your favourite pictures printed and framed, to keep those childhood memories alive as the little ones grow up.
