The Tale of Despereaux: Being the Story of a Mouse, a Princess, Some Soup, and a Spool of Thread
Deluxe Slipcase edition by Kate DiCamillo illustrated by Timothy Basil Ering
Published by Walker Books
This is a beautiful edition of the magical story by Kate DiCamillo that won the prestigious Newbery Medal in 2004.
Despereaux is a tiny sickly mouse with huge dreams and huge ears betrayed by his family and cast into mouse jail. The story tells of Despereaux’s escape and encounters with a beautiful princess whose laugh makes the world seem brighter, with terrible rats and one friendly one, of treachery and love and old fashioned courage and bravery.
This is quite long book, and we read it with fluxling #1 over a couple of weeks at bedtime. The story is really engrossing and we were looking forward to the next bits each night. The illustrations are wispy and whimsical adding to the feeling that you are reading a classic kids book in the making. This edition in its hardback box feels like a real treasure and I’m sure we’ll be reading it again. If you enjoyed the 2008 film whose soft lines and fairytale edge bring a dimension worlds away from the mainstream kids films, then this is a must buy for you.
