For those with quickly growing up children, finding a family holiday that will keep ‘a bit bigger’ kids off the tablets or smartphones for even a few hours, not to mention the adults, is a challenge.
Which perhaps goes to explain the growing trend in families with older children and teenagers seeking out more adventure in their travel plans, with 2014 seeing Africa, Asia, Jordan and Cuba gain popularity with families, alongside European trips with masses of activities built in.
Which is where Exodus’ new swathe of adventurous trips for families comes in. The leading adventure tour operator has introduced six brand new dedicated family holidays as well as 11 new family departures on trips that were previously only offered to groups of adults. These new trips offer a huge range of possibilities – including the opportunity to tackle Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, a Sri Lankan biking adventure and journeying through Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in South East Asia.
In Europe, the offering includes multi-activity weeks, in Slovenia and the beautiful Soca Valley for summer adventures or the incredible Tatra Mountains in Slovakia for a whole host of fantastic winter activities.
The Kilimanjaro trip is undoubtedly the most challenging, reflected in its 13 years and over billing. Taking the Lemosho route up the mountain, guests cross the caldera of the Shira Volcano and traverse beneath the southern icefields of Kibo in a twelve day trip.
Closer to home, we also love the sound of the Puglia Family Adventure, more accessible with its 8 years and over requirement. Amongst the cultural delights of this off the trail Italian region, activities include pasta making and exploring the famous Castellana Caves.
Other great trips in the Exodus family range include jeep tours, kayaking, abseiling and surfing in Portugal’s Vicentine Coast National Park; white-water rafting, cycling and zip-lining in the beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica (home to 6% of the world’s plant and animal life by the way), or an incredible cycling trip through Sri Lanka taking in ruins, elephants and beaches.
